Film Project Genre Research- The Conjuring

My third film is the 2013 Horror movie, The Conjuring. This film opening is a little different then the rest. For starters, it begins almost immediately with no title or job descriptions. The movie begins with eerie music that has a haunting effect on the viewers, after the production company's name goes across the screen it fades to black. The first scene starts on a close up of a dolls face, the sound over this shot is two women telling their paranormal story. After that the camera cuts to a mid-shot of three people sitting on the couch, next to the doll. The camera quality looks older because it is supposed to look like it is being shot with an actual camera. The next couple scenes are the girls memory of what happened during their story, the quality has improved greatly because they are no longer speaking into the "camera". The entire point of this is to introduce two of the main characters, Ed and Lorraine and to see what they do for a job. The following scene after this takes place in a lecture hall, Ed and Lorraine are simply explaining the events that had occurred in the paranormal scene and answering questions. Once this is done the screen fades to black and yellow text fills it. Three paragraphs appear which give the audience some background on the paranormal story that is about to be told, it is then followed with "Based on the true story". After this in huge text "The Conjuring" appears across the screen, this is different then normal movie openings because it is five minutes after the movie had begun that the title was seen by the audience. Also, no job descriptions are introduced until the final credits at the end of the movie. The final movie cost about 20 million USD to make. This 20 million was nothing compared what it made which was around $319 million USD total, it made so much because worldwide everyone was trying to see it. The Conjuring was released in 2013 and received the Empire Award for Best Horror Movie and the Critics' Choice Award in 2014.
